Google Tools

There are many Google tools that are available for teachers and students to use. One of the most important, but one of the most overlooked is how to really search for quality information. There is a great article from e School News that discusses this very topic.

The first thing that the students will need to do is create a Google account using their school email address. To do this, go to the Google home page and in the top right corner, click sign in. This will bring you to a page that will give you the option of signing up for an account. Use your school email address and use a password that you will remember. You will be able customize many of the Google tools using this account.

The next step is to complete the Google search classes. There are five different topics that the classes cover with three levels for each topic. I will have the students complete these at the same time while I lead the class. We will get through all three levels so that everyone has been exposed to essentials of productive searching.

  1. Picking right search terms

  2. Understanding search results

  3. Narrowing search to get best results

  4. Searching for evidence for research tasks

  5. Evaluating credibility of sources
